Exercise is good for the body and soul, and working out with a partner can be even more rewarding. Not only does working out in pairs make you more motivated and dedicated to your goals, but it can also foster a strong bond and allow you quality time with a friend, co-worker, or spouse. Healthy competition can make you work harder –and have more fun- than working out alone!
What are some things you can do with a partner? Sports such as tennis or racquetball can be high-intensity activities that get your blood pumping and burn calories. Weight lifting in pairs can make you push your limits and gives you an extra level of safety. Walking or running with someone makes the time go faster, and taking classes with someone you know can help you overcome anxiety and shyness.
What about specific exercises that build your core and work your muscles by teaming up with a workout partner? Here are a few that are worth a try:
Partner Squats
Facing with legs shoulder-level apart, securely hold each other’s arms. Squat simultaneously until thighs are parallel to the ground and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 10-15 times to complete a set.
Lunges
Face one another and hold hands; as you lunge forward with your right leg, your partner lunges backwards with his or her left leg, then switch. Do 10 reps then switch legs.
Triceps Extension
Hold a resistance band in each hand and have your partner do the same. Stand far enough apart to allow for a slight amount of tension, then straighten arms to extend the bands. Do 10-15 reps for a set.
Partner Push-Ups
As you are doing push-ups, have your partner gently press down on your back to give more resistance; if you find this is too difficult try while doing knee push-ups.
High-Five Push-Ups
Get in push-up position facing each other and when your body is raised give a high-five to your partner; switch hands each time. Do this as many times as you can before becoming tired, trying to increase the number of repetitions each set.
Partner Sit-Ups
Doing sit-ups with another person can actually make this exercise easier. Simply lock ankles and sit up at the same time for better balance and control.
Wheelbarrow Push-Ups
While you are in push-up position, your partner holds your ankles while squatting. Do as many push-ups as possible while your partner holds the squat position. Switch and repeat.
Working out as a team can bring your motivation to new levels. Challenge each other to reach new goals and work out harder and stronger – you will both enjoy better fitness and health!
