Coronavirus has altered the lives of millions across the globe. We’ve all made changes to our daily routines to better accommodate the “new normal.” This means the way we exercise has changed as well. Working remote jobs and following health guidelines have us spending more time indoors than ever before. And although they have since re-opened, many are still wary of utilizing gyms for regular physical activity.
We’ve compiled several easy, safe ways to get your family outside for some fall exercise. All you have to do is throw on a light jacket, lace up your favorite sneakers and get ready to sweat.
Why Is Exercise Important?
Regular physical activity has a multitude of benefits. Daily exercise can help you combat health conditions and diseases, increase energy and mood levels, promote better sleep and maintain a healthy weight. Exercise is also a great way to bring the family together for an activity everyone will enjoy.
How Much Exercise Do I Need?
The Department of Health and Human Services recommends individuals aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. It’s suggested you spread your exercise throughout the week, such as every other day.
Family-Friendly Exercise
There are plenty of ways to get the whole family moving outdoors without compromising their health and safety. Hula hooping is a great way to get your heart pumping while still following social distancing protocols. A friendly competition to see which family member can hula hoop the longest raises the stakes. You can also dust off your skates and zoom around the block. Throw in a neighborhood scavenger hunt to keep your kids moving. An outdoor dance party is another awesome way to social distance while exercising. Play some music on your phone or a speaker and have a healthy dance party. Walking or hiking outdoors is a great way to get your family’s furry friends involved. Take it up a notch with some light jogging. If you live in an area where the leaves change colors, you’ll bond together as a family and take in the autumnal colors while staying healthy.
Be Consistent
Whichever way you choose to incorporate exercise in your family’s lives, make sure to remain consistent. Regular physical activity combined with a balanced diet is the key to a long and healthy life. Implementing a fall family exercise routine is a wonderful way to build healthy habits your children will use forever.
